What is a chemical metering pump?
A metering pump, also called a dosing pump, delivers a set volume of fluid per stroke or per unit time. In oil and gas, metering pumps inject corrosion inhibitor, scale inhibitor, paraffin treatment, methanol, biocide, H2S scavenger, and demulsifier into wells and lines at low, steady rates.
How a plunger metering pump works
A motor drives a plunger back and forth inside a fluid end. On the suction stroke, chemical is drawn in past a check ball. On the discharge stroke, the plunger pushes a fixed volume out past a second check ball. Because the volume per stroke is fixed by the plunger size and stroke, output stays consistent as line pressure changes, and the pump can overcome high backpressure.
Our plunger pumps use solid ceramic plungers, energized PTFE/FFKM seals, a super duplex suction ball, and a ceramic discharge ball in a 316 stainless steel fluid end.
Sizing a metering pump
Choose the plunger by the discharge pressure you need to overcome, then check that its maximum rate covers your dose. Use speed control to set the actual rate.
| Plunger size | Max rate per head | Max pressure |
|---|---|---|
| 1/4" | 17 GPD | 6,000 PSI |
| 3/8" | 37.5 GPD | 3,000 PSI |
| 1/2" | 70 GPD | 1,250 PSI |
| 1-1/2" | 600 GPD | 300 PSI |
Control and monitoring
Variable speed, batch, PPM, and temperature modes set how the dose is delivered. SpeedGoat adds remote control and tank level alarms so you know the pump is injecting and the tank has chemical.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a metering pump and a regular pump?
A regular pump moves fluid at a rate that varies with pressure. A metering pump delivers a controlled volume per stroke regardless of pressure, which is what chemical dosing requires.
What is a plunger metering pump?
A positive displacement pump that uses a plunger to displace a fixed volume each stroke. It suits high pressure and low flow.
What flow rates do your metering pumps cover?
17 to 600 gallons per day per head, depending on plunger size.
